The nonlinear loads presents in our daily, so much in the residences, as in the trade,
brought comfort for all classes of the population, as well as facilitated the operation and the
control of productive processes in the industry. However, this type of load causes a
phenomenon in the electric system, the harmonic distortion, that causes losses in the control
of the Power Quality. Such phenomenon, besides causing the low power factor and,
consequently, to occupy the electric system excessively, it alters the waveforms of the voltage
and current signals, disturbing the electric energy metering system. Firstly, this work,
evidences the propagation of the harmonic distortion in the electric systems presenting two
studies with views to future sceneries. Soon after, under the point of view of the new
protocols of energy measurement that calculate the harmonic distortion, it presents the energy
meters performance when submitted to the distorted signals. An Analysis of the meters park
billing is accomplished through the comparison among the measurements done with the
present configuration installed and a hypothetical case, in which all the meters, differently of
the present configuration, calculate in the measurement methodology, the presence of the
harmonic distortions of signals. After this billing analysis, it is studied the possibility of
meters substitution.
