Abstract:
Financial education can be considered an essential skill for subjects today and in a context
of economic crisis it is even more necessary. However, studies point to the complexity of
financial education, mainly through several socioeconomic and demographic variables.
Thus, the present study is justified by the need to contribute to the discussion of the
subject in Brazil, bringing to light a research that has as its target audience university
students enrolled in undergraduate courses at the Federal Institute of Education, Science
and Technology of Minas Gerais - Bambuí Campus that are beneficiaries of the
Permanence Grant. To this end, a survey was carried out with 123 students benefiting
from the Permanence Scholarship Program, this benefit is one of the instruments of the
National Student Assistance Program, in force in all universities and federal education
institutes in Brazil. The objective was to measure and correlate the Financial Knowledge
Index (ICF) to socioeconomic and demographic variables through statistical tests. The
level of financial knowledge of university students on scholarships was measured,
resulting in a lower median for students with a lower family income and a higher median
for those with a family income between two and four minimum wages. Remembering that
the scholarship holders of the Permanence Scholarship Program in general come from
families in a situation of social vulnerability.
